Ann Marie Smith – SEPTIC SHOCK AND MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE
Anne Marie was not a celebrity, but her death certainly shocked plenty of Australians and mounted a lot of pressure on the government to take care of its disabled and elderly. Anne, who lived alone, suffered from cerebral palsy and although she had a caregiver since 2013 and a disability allowance, it was stopped from 2018 due to changes in the prevailing policies. When the 58-year-old was finally found in 2020, she had not moved from her woven cane chair in her living room since 2019! She was covered in painful pressure sores and was severely malnourished. After being taken to the hospital, she underwent surgery, but sadly passed away just a day later in April of 2020. Such a tragic and painful end, which could have been avoided if Anne’s benefits continued to reach her.
