Martin Luther King Jr. – Died April 4, 1968
Few black Americans are as legendary as Martin Luther King Jr. He rose to prominence as a clergyman and later became a beacon of black civil rights. As a noted advocate of nonviolence, he became a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Unfortunately, his work in the Civil Rights Movement made him plenty of enemies and he’s received countless death threats since the 50’s. He even survived a stabbing in 1958. Sadly, convicted felon and fugitive James Earl Ray succeeded in murdering the great man on 1968 by shooting him as he was standing on the balcony of his hotel in Memphis. A memorable picture of Martin lying on the ground in the ensuing panic following the shooting has since become one of the most iconic products of photography.
