There is no question that one of the most beloved Western-themed TV shows, or just TV shows in general, for that matter, is Gunsmoke. So it’s no surprise at all that one of the all time favorite Western characters is that of Matt Dillon, Dodge City’s fair marshal. Actor James Arness gave life to the famous Old West sheriff character. Although Arness also played the memorable part of Zeb Macahan in the TV series How the West Was Won, he is still best remembered as Matt Dillon. Before his death from natural causes in 2011, Arness lived to witness his name among the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time by TV Guide and he claimed the 6th spot in People magazine’s top 25 television stars of all time in 1989.
