From Child Star to Celebrated Filmmaker: The Incredible and Extraordinary Life of Ron Howard

Big Break

When Howard was 4 years old in 1958, his family relocated from Oklahoma to Hollywood, renting an apartment near the Desilu Studios. It was where the TV show The Andy Griffith Show was filmed when it aired.  After 2 years of living a stone’s throw away from a filming studio, Howard got his biggest acting break.  The creators of The Andy Griffith Show gave Howard the role of Opie Taylor, son of Andy Taylor, the character played by Andy Griffith.  He was credited as Ronny Howard and not as Ron Howard then.  The actor portrayed the character for 8 seasons until the show ended in 1968.
