Serving in the Navy
Abandoned by his real father at a young age, Hudson had only his stepfather Wallace Fitzgerald to look up to. It has been said that the actor hated his stepfather because he was very strict, since he was former Marine Corps officer. But Hudson would eventually follow in his footsteps and join the Navy after he graduated from high school in 1943. While serving in the military, Hudson was deployed in the South Pacific as an aircraft mechanic. He stayed in the Philippines until he was discharged and sent back to the United States, in San Francisco.
