While he was in this prestigious position, Prentiss faced some difficulties, one of which was the national fraternity union turning down the pledge of an African-American Kappa Sigma member, even though Prentiss and company accepted him. The young fraternity president stood behind this member, Gene Grigsby, and the Kappa Sigma fraternity quit the union to become an independent chapter. Looks like his school had family had given him a good education, after all.
