A Troubled Childhood
It was in the town of Winnetka in Illinois on the 17th of November, 1925 that Hudson was born, and he was given the name Roy Harold Scherer, Jr. His birth coincided with the Great Depression and named after his auto mechanic father, Roy Harold Scherer, Sr. Sadly, his parents’ marriage ended in a divorce when he was only 4 years old. Shortly after that, Hudson’s mother, Katherine Wood, remarried a man named Wallace Fitzgerald. Without Hudson’s consent, his stepfather adopted him and changed his name to Roy Fitzgerald.
