So in real life, it was George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life who joined the military, and not Harry! Stewart joined the U.S. Air Force and fought during World War II. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1959 and later on Major General, as he served the army for a total of 27 years! He was the first major motion picture actor who joined the military, which did not surprise his family, because both his grandfather and father also served the country during war.
