Clark Gable
He is one of the greatest and most famous actors of all time and the story of how Clark Gable joined the Army appears to come from a movie script. Gable was married several times, but some say his greatest love was wife Carole Lombard. Divorce did not end Gable and Lombard’s marriage, but rather her death in 1942 did, due to a car crash when she was returning to Los Angeles from Indiana, where she attended a war bond rally. Feeling devastated by his loss, Gable wrote a telegram to President Franklin D. Roosevelt asking to be included in the effort to win the war. Although the president wrote back and asked him to stay where he was, the actor joined the United States Army Air Forces. Because of his film connections, Gable headed a six-man motion picture unit attached to a B-17 bomb group.
