Sam Elliot is well known as a modern day cowboy in the big screen but when he started out by moving to California, he was working on odd jobs, doing construction work to get by, all the while waiting for his career to take off. He then joined the California Army National Guard. Not Long after that, he caught his big break – landing a role in the western classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. With his background in the military he also took on military themed roles on TV and movies, a field he had first hand knowledge of. He was awarded the Spirit of America Award in 2002 as he was a member of the California Air National Guard’s 163rd Airlift Wing out of Channel Islands.
