Drinking Gladiators’ Blood
Because of the absence of modern day medicines and medical schools, there was an unusual practice by ancient Romans that can be called ‘blood curdling’. Gladiators are fighters who participate in staged battles, and because people looked up to them for their strength and agility, a belief was established that once fallen, their blood could cure many diseases, specifically epilepsy. This belief can be traced back to the first gladiatorial battles that were originally part of Etruscan funeral rites. Because of this belief that the fallen gladiators blood can cleanse the soul of the deceased, it was seen as an effective way to cleanse diseases as well.
