Subway Surprise
It is probably normal for Italians to see old structures from ancient Roman times, and yet, they were still surprised to find a huge Roman barrack that dates back to 2nd Century AD, while digging for the new metro line in Rome. The original plan of building a subway changed because of what they found, Italy changed it to an ‘archaeological station’ at Amba Aradam. The period the barracks belong to have been dated back to the rule of Emperor Hadrian, so it is assumed that the ruins that covers 900 square meters used to house the Hadrian’s Praetorian Guards. The archaeological site included a 100 meter hallway with 39 rooms, along with different items like bronze coins, bracelets, and even human bones.
