Mysterious Facts and Discoveries of Ancient Rome
The Truth About Roman Generals
There are many Roman generals that we’ve seen in movies, most often they are depicted as heroes who fights bravely in battles. Take for example the character of actor Russell Crowe in the film The Gladiator where he was a Roman general first before ending up as a gladiator. In reality though, Roman generals did little more than manage their army and they were not required to fight in the battlefield. Yet when a general faces a losing battle, he is expected to draw his sword to either kill himself or fight the enemy for an honorable death. The only known Roman general who died while fighting in the battlefield was Maximinus Thrax, who reigned from AD 235 to 238.
