Mysterious Facts and Discoveries of Ancient Rome
The Rare Nero Coin
It’s safe to say Nero is one of the most controversial emperors that Rome has ever had. He had an early start to his rule, when he was 16 to be exact, had his mother killed, and is said to be the master mind of the Great Fire of Rome. Since he’s part of the glorious days of the Roman Empire, finding a coin that was made and circulated during his reign bearing his face and name is something to be celebrated if you’re an archaeologist. The rare coin was unearthed in Vindolanda in Northern England, which was near Hadrian’s Wall, and considered to be a major Roman hub. The rare gold coin is called an Aureus and although it is slimmer than most ancient Roman coins, it is quite heavy.
