To this day, people still wondering whether Phyllis Gates actually knew that Hudson was gay when they got married. Some say she was unaware, while others said she knew of the setup and that she was a lesbian herself. While still being married to his wife, Hudson would continue having affairs with men, sometimes leaving Gates alone for long periods of time. The actor was the one who insinuated Gates was also gay; as there were times she also disappeared for a weekend with a woman. This was corroborated by Bob Hofler, who mentioned Gates was a lesbian, in his article published in the LGBT magazine The Advocate.
