Alec Guinness may be an English actor, but he is known and loved by many Americans. Why? Because he played Obi Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars film series. Another film he is known for is The Bridge on the River Kwai where he played Colonel Nicholson. Guinness may have played the part well because he has some military background, serving in Great Britain’s Royal Navy during World War II. Guinness reached the position of commanding officer of a landing craft. Given his high rank, Alec saw action such as the invasion of Elbe, the invasion of Sicily, and he is said to have helped in the transportation of British soldiers to the shores of Normandy on D-Day.
