Imagine you are a high school student with no care at all about the big problems that adult faces, and then one day people arrive in your school and ask you if you want to join the Army. That is exactly what happened to comedy actor and director Mel Brooks when he was attending high school in his native Brooklyn. At first he thought he wouldn’t pass the required test, but he did so he was sent to be part of the Army Specialized Training Program at the Virginia Military Institute. Before starring in Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder, Brooks reached the position of corporal in the United States Army during World War II, and one of the important job he was assigned was diffusing land mines. Brooks also participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
