Celebrities Who You Didn’t Know Served In The Military

Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker was a famous American-born French entertainer who headlined the revues of the Folies Bergère in Paris during the 1920s.  The beauty, who is notable for wearing costumes made of artificial bananas, is considered a symbol of the Jazz Age.  Although an American, Baker considered France her second home, which may be why she became a French Resistance agent during World War II.  Because of her beauty and charm, the French military intelligence recruited Baker to become an agent.  She was successful in gathering information about the German troops thus she was said to be an honorable correspondent.  After the war, the entertainer was awarded the Croix de Guerre (military cross) and the Rosette de la Resistance.  Being adopted herself, Baker ended up adopting 12 children later in life.
