Mysterious Facts and Discoveries of Ancient Rome
Only the Elite Wear Purple
The rich has always made sure to control access to certain luxury items throughout history, one of them being the use of the color purple. Imagine that during ancient times, if you are not part of the elite you are forbidden to use this lovely color. The name of the color was Tyrian purple, and it was identified as the color of royalty in ancient Rome. To begin with, the middle class and the poor could not afford the color as it is very expensive. Why wouldn’t it be when thousands of snails need to be harvested and boiled for hours just to create a small amount of dye? Tyrian purple is said to be worth more than its weight in gold.
