Rock Hudson: The Complicated Life of a Legendary Hollywood Heartthrob
His Death
After appearing on the show Doris Day’s Best Friends, Doris Day hugged Hudson goodbye as he was carried off by a small plane to go to the airport. She admitted she was in tears that day, and it was the last time she saw the actor alive. From the airport, Hudson was flown to Pairs for treatment. It was at the Ritz Hotel in Paris where the actor collapsed, so his team had to release a statement saying that he had liver cancer. Four days later, Hudson’s French publicist Yanou Collart retracted that statement and confirmed the actor did indeed have AIDS. He went home on a stretcher to the United States and was directly taken to the UCLA Medical Center. Three months after his collapse in Paris, Hudson died in his sleep at his home on October 2, 1985, surrounded by friends and loved ones.
