Rock Hudson: The Complicated Life of a Legendary Hollywood Heartthrob

What’s in a Name?

Even at a young age, Hudson was already showing signs of having interests in the performing arts.  He was in the school glee club, and even tried out for different stage plays but he had no success.  It was talent scout Henry Willson who saw potential in him, especially after seeing the headshots that were sent to him in 1947.  Perhaps Wilson thought it was the face that would find success in Hollywood and give him a hefty bank account, as his ‘discoverer’ and agent.  However, his name had no appeal, so Wilson changed it to Rock Hudson.  He took the ‘Rock’ from the Rock of Gibraltar, and the ‘Hudson’ from the Hudson River. Very creative, Henry!
